Anti-Depressants: The Secret to Preventing Alzheimer's?

The Science Translational Medicine journal recently published research about the generic antidepressant citalopram, which was developed by Forest Laboratories (NYSE: FRX  )  under the brand name Celexa, as a potential way to help slow down the development of Alzheimer's disease.

Now this study was small and further research needs to be done, but it shows that anti-depressent use may reduce the production of beta-amyloid plaques, seen as a contributing factor for the development of Alzheimer's. However, there is a long way to go and a lot of science to discover before these common drugs are seen as a preventative tool for those at risk.

In this episode of The Motley Fool's health-care show Market Checkup, analysts David Williamson and Michael Douglass discuss this trial, how our knowledge of the disease is evolving and the many other new Alzheimer's treatments being developed right now.

Will Maleficent Do In Disney?

Not likely, says Wunderlich’s Matthew Harrigan of Walt Disney’s (DIS) Sleeping Beauty reboot starting Angelina Jolie. He explains:

A likely $55-60mm opening for Maleficent should belie what once were expectations that the supposed $170mm production cost project would emerge as Disney’s next major write-off. This is despite the twists in marketing a film that is in somewhat of a no-man’s land between an action film and a fairy tale fantasy. Although we are still modeling a slight decrease in F2015 film profit even with the advent of The Avengers: Age of Ultron we still have the studio earning near $1.2B. We value the studio at a likely Street high $19.1B. Event films from Disney Animation, Disney live action, Pixar, Marvel and LucasFilm support a top position even with fewer releases than other studios. We are therefore slightly increasing our S&P 500 linked price target on Hold-rated Disney to $83 from $77.

Michigan men finding success in failure talks

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — An entrepreneur told a Detroit audience about how he had failed as a father, husband and businessman.

In the crowd sat a riveted Jordan O'Neil. At least until the speaker intoned in the inevitable "but," followed by his tale of second-chance success.

"He basically told a story that grabbed the full attention of the 800 people in the crowd because it was so different," O'Neil said. "What if he had dropped the mic and walked off the stage — just left it there?"

Thus was born the idea for Failure: Lab. He gathered three friends and developed what would become an event featuring six speakers sharing 10-minute failures — straight with no "lessons learned" chaser. The audience is left to glean the meaning and encouraged to share its thoughts on social media as well as notecards that are collected afterward.

It's working, at least in O'Neil's home state of Michigan. During the past year, Failure: Lab has come to theaters in Grand Rapids, East Lansing and Detroit, and its return Friday to Grand Rapids is sold out. Now, his team believes stumbling self-help for the 21st century can succeed beyond its comfy confines — they're planning shows in New Orleans, Mexico City, Brooklyn, New York, and possibly Baghdad.

Failure: Lab's focus is meant to stand out in a crowded field of "idea conferences," such as the global juggernaut TED (Technology, Entertainment and Design). Following TED's lead, Failure: Lab now licenses the name and concept for shows worldwide.

"At first we were trying to hold it very tight, then we realized we have to let it fly," said O'Neil, who by day designs university community relations plans. "We can't continue to do it on our own."

Venture capitalists and entrepreneurs love to say there's no success without several failures, and an online search for "books on failure" finds titles such as "Failing Forward: Turning Mistakes into Stepping Stones for Success" and "How the Mighty Fall: And Why Some Companies Never Give In."!

Yet even with failure blooming in business circles, there's a contradiction with a larger culture that prefers stories come with a moral. Jonathan Williams, a Failure: Lab co-founder, says the goal isn't "to glorify failure" but "to crush the stigma around it."

A recent show at Michigan State University proved succeeding at failure can be tricky, as some speakers slipped in lessons or sprinkled stories with triumphs.

Miz Korona, the rapper best known for being in the 2002 film "8 Mile," spoke that night of the lows following the high of appearing in the hit movie with Eminem.

"I am not the '8 Mile' lunch truck lady — I'm a struggling artist," she said, adding that "at the end of the day, I'm still in Detroit," working at a retail superstore and her "entourage" long gone.

She couldn't help offering advice, such as "Never let your friends become your manager if they don't know the business." Lessons shared by the audience and posted on Failure: Lab's website include, "Don't get reality and fiction mixed up" and "Being in 1 movie does not make 1 a movie star."

Other storytellers included author and journalist Mike Sager, who spoke of selfishness that led him to self-destructive behavior upon becoming a father, and Michigan State Athletic Director Mark Hollis, who choked up as he lamented failing his family by working long hours yet says he feels guilty when he's home.

"It's so hard for people not to deliver some sort of lesson," O'Neil said. "We're getting better at coaching storytellers."

The speakers aren't the only ones who have struggled. O'Neil said a big sponsor from the first event loved it but lobbied for lessons.

"We said, 'We appreciate your support but it's really not the route we want to go,'" he said.

Christian Terwiesch, an author and professor at University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, said Failure: Lab fills an educational niche and capitalizes on a business trend — demystifying the innovation process and "making failure ! much more! acceptable."

His advice as Failure: Lab seeks a global audience: Stay grounded with storytellers who aren't marquee names — and TED alums — like Bono or Bill Gates.

"Oftentimes it's much easier to talk about failures ... if you've just made a billion dollars," Terwiesch said.

O'Neil said he and his partners — Williams, Austin Dean and Brian Dokter — want to keep a local feel.

"We've had NBA players, Grammy winners ... and regular Joes," he said. "I think it's those regular Joes — they have the most powerful stories at each one."

Is the Utica Shale Really a World-Class Energy Asset?

Last week at its Analyst Day Chesapeake Energy (NYSE: CHK  ) unveiled the Utica Shale as its next world-class asset. That's in stark contrast to what Halcon Resources (NYSE: HK  ) thinks about the play, as it has virtually abandoned its efforts to develop its Utica Shale acreage. It's divergent opinions like these that make it tough for investors to determine who to believe when it comes to the Utica Shale.

Chesapeake Energy's advantage
Chesapeake Energy already has a long history in the Utica Shale. It was the first company to turn a well into production in June of 2011. The competition didn't start putting wells online until nearly a year later when Hess (NYSE: HES  ) brought its first well into production that April. Being first in the basin is proving to be a real competitive advantage for Chesapeake Energy as it has drilled more wells than all of its competitors combined as the following slide shows.

Source: Chesapeake Energy Investor Presentation (Link opens a PDF)

In addition to drilling more wells than all of its competitors, Chesapeake Energy has invested in getting to know the rocks beneath its acreage. The company has nearly a mile of core samples so that it can understand the reservoir flow and can optimize completions as that slide noted. Further, the company has over 600 miles of 3D seismic data which helps it understand the structure to optimize lateral placement. This data allows it to drill wells with a higher degree of certainty of success.

Knowledge yields results
This knowledge of the basin is yielding best-in-class well results. Chesapeake Energy can drill its wells faster and for less money, which is yielding substantially higher rates of return as the following side shows.

Source: Chesapeake Energy Investor Presentation

As that slide notes, when Chesapeake Energy invests capital in a non-operated well drilled by a company like Hess its rate of return on that well averages just 4%. However, when Chesapeake Energy invests in a well where it's the operator it earned 20% last year, with that return heading higher this year as it continues to improve. These results are why Chesapeake Energy continues to drill in the Utica Shale while smaller peers like Halcon Resources have given up and while Hess has decided to sell some of its land position.

Investor takeaway
For companies like Chesapeake Energy with lower costs, the Utica Shale really is a world-class asset. However, for others like Halcon Resources or Hess the Utica Shale is just not going to fuel returns because both have higher costs and aren't in the best parts of the basin.

What we're seeing in the Utica Shale is that location is one key but to really drive value the driller needs to know the rocks underneath its acres. By knowing the rocks and where to place and optimize wells companies like Chesapeake Energy are pushing well costs down. These are the companies that can turn the Utica into a world-class basin, while the rest just can't manage results worth their capital dollars.

VW Passat diesel is elegant mileage champ

The current Volkswagen Passat diesel is being shown the door, with its engine to be replaced later this year by a new diesel that will be widely used in VW's U.S. lineup.

Other updates are due next year for the 2016 Passat.

But the current diesel model remains popular — 42% of Passats sold in April were diesel. And it was a good month for Passat, so that's 42% of a strong number.

VW's usual "take" rate for the TDI — VW's name for the diesel — is about 23%, so VW either was giving away the diesel Passat last month, or people suddenly realized that diesels are a good way to boost mileage without the complexity of a gas-electric hybrid.

A heavily promoted bonus for buyers — a $1,000 card for diesel fuel — surely helped. Based on recent diesel prices and the car's combined city/highway mileage rating for the car, the card is worth roughly 8,600 free miles.

Test Drive wanted to say farewell to the current Passat TDI with a reminder drive, hoping for more insight into why so many sold last month. And insights we got, though not all strictly related to the TDI powerplant:

Expect good but not stupendous mileage in the city. That's what hybrids are for. Diesels excel on longer runs.

We notched about 25 mpg in short-hop suburban schlepping; about 29 in longer suburban trips; and about 50 on the highway.

Auto editor Fred Meier reported an astonishing 53.1 mpg with a different but similarly outfitted Passat TDI in 1,579 mostly highway miles from the East Coast over the mountains to the Midwest and back and driven, shall we say, not always gently.

That tester was similar to VW's record-setting Passat that got 77.99 mpg in 8,122 miles through the Lower 48 states. The record-setter, though, had special tires and was driven strictly for mileage, without much regard for speed, convenience or comfort.

The 53.1 was in the real world: 800 pounds of people and cargo, AC on, keeping up with, or passing, the Joneses on the turnpike.

Don't expect gee-w! hiz electronics. For example, the backup camera has a dimmer image than some rivals, making it harder to use in low light. And phone pairing was non-pairing with our too-hip Windows phone. IPhone had better luck, maybe you will, too.

Be delighted by the very roomy back seat. Look for opportunities to carry passengers back there. Remarkable.

Renew your understanding of "elegant," an oft-misused word meaning high-class simplicity. Passat's interior is laudable for the elegance of its straightforward dash, gauges, upholstery and trim. The exterior is likewise applause-worthy for not trying too hard in pursuit of "styling."

Reacquaint yourself with comfort. Passat's seats are close to the Goldilocks Baby Bear standard: just right. Firm, supportive but not back-breakers, as in some Europeans. Great for road trips.

Be reminded how pleasant it is to pilot an engaging car. No-drama corners. Treat-filled steering and stopping.

We found the ride could turn a bit choppy on wrinkled asphalt, which sounds like a "duh," but other test vehicles have handled that area more gracefully.

What about that new EA288 diesel due in a few months? VW says it's rated 150 horsepower, up 10 hp, with the same 236 pounds-feet of torque. And it says emissions-reducing changes also result in better throttle response. We'd vote for that. While the test car wasn't sluggish, especially once it picked up a bit of speed, it could have felt perkier.

Passat strikes us as a very good sedan, able to satisfy practical needs and driving enthusiast longings. Equip it with the TDI and it enjoys a "green" credential hard to find elsewhere.

But if we were writing the check, we'd wait to try the new engine, or perhaps even bide our time until the updated 2016 model next year, hoping it has friendlier electronics and a handful of other updates. Without losing its elegance, of course.

WHAT STOOD OUT

Highway mpg: 50 or more without trying.

Comfort: Lots of room, great seats.

! Driving feel: Nice mix of comfy, sporty.

Sears ‘Significantly Overvalued,’ Credit Suisse Says

Sears (SHLD) is sagging once again after the shrinking retailer reported financial results this morning.

Associated Press

Sears reported a loss of $402 million, much bigger than the year-ago loss of $279 million, while revenue declined to $7.88 billion, which beat analyst forecasts of $7.71 billion. Gross margins fell to 23.2% from 25.5%, while same-store sales rose 0.2%.

Credit Suisse analysts Gary Balter and Andrew Kinder tries to give Sears the benefit of the doubt:

Some investors…believe that we are too negative on Sears Holdings’ outlook…So let's accept their math and take the low end of their assumed improvements. Based on that, we would add $1 billion to EBITDA from initiatives, which adding to trailing twelve months would give them positive EBITDA (yes you read that right) of $300 million. Here is the problem. The bulls on Sears argue for the most part that the value is in the real estate and brand names. If Mr. Lampert is trying to make it as an operator we should value them as such, but that’s a bigger problem. Using a positive $300 million EBITDA, that would imply a multiple of 29.5x lets say in 2017 to give them time for the turnaround. That would place their multiple well above anything we cover, including our best growth names such as The Container Store (TCS), Tractor Supply (TSCO)…Lumber Liquidators (LL), and CarMax (KMX). So if one accepts the turnaround and we give them an eight multiple of EBITDA three years out, a somewhat generous multiple for a non-top-line grower, then the value of the equity would be negative. H'mmm. Maybe the company should explore the asset sale. Said another way, this remains a significantly overvalued stock and while we are not moving to a negative target price, we maintain our $20 price target.

Best Construction Material Companies To Buy For 2015

Cheap gas is keeping inflation in check.

The Labor Department reported Thursday that lower gas prices helped push down the U.S. producer price index in October, marking the second straight month of decline. The index, which reflects the wholesale price of good before they reach consumers, fell 0.2% in October, following a 0.1% dip in September.

Gas plunged 3.8% in October helping fuel an overall 1.5% decline in "finished energy goods," the first such drop since a 2.5% fall in April. Prices for diesel fuel and residential natural gas also contributed to the October decline.

CONSUMER PRICES: Inflation falls as gas prices plummet

Over the past 12 months, energy costs have helped tame inflation. Prices have increased just 0.3% in that stretch.

Excluding volatile energy and food prices, wholesale costs increased 0.2% in October and 1.4% in the past 12 months. The continued low level of inflation enables the Federal Reserve to maintain its unique stimulus measures.

Nigeria reformed banking system has provided many foreigners with an attractive means to invest in the fast-growing domestic economy. The banking industry is important, not only because of the rise of microfinance, but because of the move by banks into consumer banking. Until recently, banks were mainly financing large businesses or the government through bond purchases. Following a banking crisis in 2008, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) conducted an audit of the commercial banking sector. All banks that failed the audit had their CEOs replaced. The state-owned Asset Management Corporation (AMCON) was created to purchase non-performing loans and recapitalize the unhealthy banks. A recent review of the country banks by the IMF showed a dramatic increase in profits for the industry in 2012, while the capital adequacy ratio was above the minimum requirement of 10% and non-performing loans were below the mandated threshold of 5%5.

Stop Worrying About Drug Prices and Other Biotech News (ITMN, BIIB, ALXN, UTHR & TNIB)

The biotech sector may have lost some favor on Wall Street, but there is still plenty of interesting or overlooked news about the sector and/or biotech stocks like InterMune Inc (NASDAQ: ITMN), Biogen Idec Inc (NASDAQ: BIIB), Alexion Pharmaceuticals, Inc (NASDAQ: ALXN), United Therapeutics Corporation (NASDAQ: UTHR) and TNI BioTech, Inc (OTCMKTS: TNIB):

Are Concerns About Drug Prices Overblown? Credit Suisse analyst Ravi Mehrotra believes a rally in large-cap biotech stocks can be resurrected in part because concerns about drug prices might be overblown:

"We DO think drug pricing remains an very active debate in the press, politically and in the stock market. The US also works on (2) Competition and (3) Freedom of choice – that includes drugs! Basic laws of economics will play through, bigger picture pricing debates WILL happen. The drug market WILL change. Truly innovative drugs, with clear pharmacoeconomic benefit, and little competition will retain premium pricing…"

Three Reasons (Along with Three Stocks) to Like in Biotech. Oppenheimer's Ari Wald recently appeared on Yahoo! Finance's Breakout Program with Jeff Macke to say that the sector has held its uptrend and:

"There are three things I like about (the sector): It's oversold. It's stabilizing on support and it's still in an uptrend."

He then cited Biogen Idec Inc, Alexion Pharmaceuticals, Inc and United Therapeutics Corporation for their 200-day moving averages:

InterMune Inc's Big Week Next Week. InterMune Inc itself will give important presentations of data regarding pirfenidone in IPF patients on both Sunday, May 18 and Tuesday, May 20. There will also be live webcasts on each of those days. In early May, Oppenheimer had recommended buying InterMune Inc shares ahead of the American Thoracic Society meeting albeit the real winners have been anyone holding the stock before February 24th when shares doubled on late-stage clinical trial results.

Justin Sullivan/Getty Images March hasn't been a good month for the quick-service industry. Sbarro -- the pizza and pasta chain that's a staple in many malls -- filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization earlier this month. A few days later it was toasted-sandwich maker Quiznos following suit. This doesn't mean that you'll never have another slice of Sbarro's New York-style pizza or a French dip sub at Quiznos. Unlike Chapter 7 bankruptcy, where cash-strapped companies wind down their operations, Chapter 11 gives companies another chance to get it right after negotiating with creditors. It's not a good place to be -- and this is the second time Sbarro has gone this route in the past three years. However, things have to be pretty bad if you're willing to risk upsetting creditors and potentially hand over ownership in the pursuit of a cleaner balance sheet. Sbarro and Quiznos hope that a fiscal makeover will turn the tide. Sbarro will surrender ownership to lenders in a move that will replace 80 percent of its debt with equity. Quiznos filed a prepackaged restructuring plan that would shave $400 million of debt. Both chains will live on, but they may not be the same. Mauled at the Mall Sbarro has shut 180 company-owned locations with plans to shutter dozens more. There are now less than 800 units. Quiznos has 2,100 largely franchisee-owned locations, but we'll have to see how that holds up over time. Sbarro cited an "unprecedented decline in mall traffic" as a factor in its slide. As shoppers migrate online, there has been slower foot traffic at the suburban mall and hence to the food court. Quiznos relies on standalone locations and strip-mall outlets that haven't necessarily suffered from the thinning shopping mall crowds that have hurt Sbarro. However, Quiznos has been hit by everything from the larger Subway following it into toasted subs to folks scaling back on carbohydrates. It didn't seem as if this was a problem last year. Richmont Mines (RIC) engages in the mining, exploration and development of mining properties, principally gold in Canada. This stock closed up 2.4% to $1.68 in Tuesday's trading session.

    Tuesday's Range: $1.61-$1.68

    52-Week Range: $1.31-$5.50

    Tuesday's Volume: 76,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 101,786

From a technical perspective, RIC bounced higher here right off its 50-day moving average of $1.59 with decent upside volume. This stock has been uptrending strong for the last month and change, with shares moving higher from its low of $1.31 to its recent high of $1.71. During that move, shares of RIC have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of RIC within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if RIC manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance at $1.71 to $1.80 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in RIC as long as it's trending above its 50-day at $1.59 or above more near-term support levels at $1.50 to $1.44 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 101,786 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then RIC will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $2.10 to $2.20. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give RIC a chance to tag its 200-day moving average at $2.48.

Recently giant food conglomerate, Cargill announced it had partnered with the Swiss biosynthetic pharmaceutical company, Evolva (EVE:SW), to develop a more consistent and less expensive stevia sweetener via Evolva microbial fermentation-based process. This is big news for the future of stevia because a microbial fermentation-based process does not have to rely on soil conditions or weather, and stevia can be manufactured anywhere, thus having the potential of guaranteeing an endless supply line of stevia. Through the microbial fermentation, the manufacturer has the capability to process the key sweet individual components of stevia using low-cost plant sugars, and allows for the individual components of stevia, regardless of how minute, to be developed creating blends in any volume, which then could open the door for these manufacturers to fine-tune its stevia to local tastes. But what would be most attractive is that, because the fermentation process does not require the entire plant, the method could conceivably shave upwards of 70% off the cost of producing stevia extracts.

Last week,Wendy's (NASDAQ: WEN  ) announced in its second-quarter earnings report that it will sell 425 company-operated stores to franchisees. This will reduce the number of company-owned and -operated stores in the Wendy's system from 22% to 15%. Coupled with earnings that beat expectations, Wendy's stock rose more than 8.5% on the day of the announcement. After a few years of rather aimless wandering while McDonald's (NYSE: MCD  ) increased its dominance, and Burger King (NYSE: BKW  ) returned to the public markets courtesy of merger-savvy Brazilian billionaires, is Wendy's poised to excite investors again?

  • [By Bloomberg Businessweek]

Alamy McDonald's (MCD) may recently have struggled to lure customers, but it still does far more business at each location than rival burger chains. The average McDonald's restaurant in the U.S. drew $2.6 million in revenue last year. Average sales for No. 2 chain Burger King (BKW): $1.2 million, according to data from its largest franchisee, Carrols Restaurant Group (TAST). What accounts for this more-than-a-million gap? "Everything from marketing and site selection to product initiatives and franchisee selection have been historical factors," said Nick Setyan, vice president in charge of equity research at Wedbush Securities, in an email. Here are four factors that drive higher sales volumes at McDonald's: 1. McDonald's gets more customers during off-peak hours. Look no further than the strength of its breakfast business relative that of Burger King, says Darren Tristano, executive vice president at restaurant consultancy Technomic. Egg McMuffin is part of the fast-food vocabulary in a way Burger King can't match. And beverage and snack offerings such as McCafe and wraps have helped increase McDonald's sales between meals. The dramatic impact from off-peak business explains why chains such as Taco Bell (YUM) are entering the battle for morning customers, while others such as Starbucks (SBUX) are seeking more afternoon and evening business. 2. The power of the Happy Meal. McDonald's has the largest share of kids meal sales in the fast-food industry and gets about 10 percent of total sales from Happy Meals, the most commonly advertised child-oriented fast-food item on television. Burger King, meanwhile, is still trying to win back "parties with kids and seniors and women," said Josh Kobza, Burger King's chief financial officer, at a conference last year. One way to do that: "We got rid of the creepy king character that tended to scare away women and children." 3. McDonald's has an edge on efficiency. Despite recent operational challenges at McDonald's,

  • [By WWW.DAILYFINANCE.COM]

Andrew Harrer/Bloomberg via Getty Images It's apparently never too early to have a hamburger. While most chains wait until 10 or 11 a.m. to begin offering their signature burgers, early risers will be able to skip straight to lunch at thousands of participating Burger King (BKW) locations. The fast food giant's betting that some morning commuters want more than just a breakfast burrito or a ham and egg sandwich for breakfast. Later this month Burger King is rolling out a "burgers for breakfast" campaign across 5,000 of its restaurants, offering its signature Whopper as well as a few other burgers and chicken sandwiches in the morning. Assuming that you don't want hash browns on the side, fries will also be made available. So will apple pie. Whopper, BK King and Original Fried Chicken sandwiches will be part of the chain's breakfast offerings. Will it confuse diners? Will the move complicate matters for employees manning the prep tables and fryers? Will the great variety stall patrons as they ponder the menu when it's time to order, creating longer wait times for food? The questions won't be answered right away, but Burger King doesn't have much of a choice. Breakfast is big business, and chains have to stand out one way or another. Another Shot in the Battle for Breakfast It isn't easy to make a difference in the morning. Just ask Wendy's (WEN), which has already retreated twice from the national breakfast market over the past decade. The first time it thought that it could set itself apart by offering sausage gravy-soaked biscuits and breakfast versions of its then-popular Frescata sandwiches. More recently it tried to stick closer to the McDonald's (MCD) playbook with oatmeal, breakfast burritos and biscuit sandwiches. That didn't pan out either, and last year it discontinued breakfast at all but less than 10 percent of its restaurants. It's not just the burger flippers hoping to woo diners with caffeinated mornings. Subway -- the world's largest restaur
