Top Defensive Companies To Invest In 2014

John Reese, editor of Validea, analyzes the investment strategies of a "legendary" investor. For his latest Guru Spotlight, he turns to the father of value investing, Benjamin Graham.

Today, many investors look to Warren Buffett for advice about the stock market and economy. But before he became one of the world's richest men and greatest investors, there was someone whose investment advice Buffett himself cherished: Ben Graham.

And Buffett was far from alone. Known as "The Father of Value Investing," Graham inspired a number of famous "sons"ario Gabelli, John Neff, and John Templetonre Graham disciples who went on to their own stock market greatness.

Graham built his reputationnd fortuney using an extremely conservative, low-risk approach to investing. To him, preserving one's original capital was every bit as important as netting big gains.

In terms of specifics, Graham's "Defensive Investor" approach limited risk in a number of ways, and my Graham-based model lays out several of those methods.

If you listened to my bullish calls from December 27th and/or February 24th about Uranerz Energy Corp. (NYSEMKT:URZ), Uranium Resources, Inc. (NASDAQ:URRE), and Ur-Energy Inc. (NYSEMKT:URG), then congratulations - you're now up as much as 50%, depending on when you stepped into a trade, and which stock you chose. Now get out. See, as well as URZ and URG have done and are doing (URRE not so much), it looks like the short-term rally I first spotted a little more than a couple of months ago has fully run its course, and now these names are setting up a pullback.

Since the start of the week, small cap nuclear fuel stock USEC Inc (NYSE: USU) more than doubled for investors, something that has not happened for investors in uranium stocks like Uranium Resources, Inc (NASDAQ: URRE), Denison Mines Corp (NYSEMKT: DNN), Ur-Energy Inc. (NYSEMKT: URG) and Uranerz Energy Corp (NYSEMKT: URZ). To recap: USEC Inc closed at the $6 level on Friday, but then it surged to the $15 level on Monday only to open at the $10 level on Tuesday when it ultimately closed at $12.46. So what in the world is going on with USEC Inc and is it time to revisit nuclear fuel and uranium stocks?

Well, I'll give myself an A for effort, but a C- for timing. But, I can bump that C- up to a B+ if my intuition is right as we head into the last few days of 2013 and the first few of 2014. What I'm talking about is a bullish commentary I penned back on November 26th regarding Uranerz Energy Corp. (NYSEMKT:URZ), Uranium Resources, Inc. (NASDAQ:URRE), and Ur-Energy Inc. (NYSEMKT:URG). All three stocks were perking up, and more than that, the buzz surrounding URG, URRE, and URZ was getting louder. More often than not, when the fervor and bullish action and chatter reaches the levels they had reached a month ago, an explosion is right around the corner.

In at least one Texas bank and one Ohio credit union, 3D video banking is currently undergoing testing, according to TheFinancialBrand.com, a website for bank and credit union marketing executives. Three-dimensional video banking is similar to a consumer video conference with a bank representative –- only in this case, the executive looks like a living, breathing person sitting across from you. Thanks to theater surround sound, the representative also sounds as if they're in the same room. And since the consumer is interacting with a real person and not an automated hologram, the experience apparently isn't much different than the real thing. Consumers became acquainted with online banking during the 1990s and the first decade of the 2000s. The 2010s are shaping up as the era of mobile banking. That was underscored Sept. 10-11 in New York City when Mitek Systems Inc. The product allows consumers to open a bank account within 60 seconds. If you have your bank's app, you can use your smartphone's camera to take a photo of the front and back of your driver's license, and presto, your new checking, savings or credit card account is open. Therefore the situation is still very bullish for investors in physical gold and the gold ETFs (GLD, CEF, and PHYS). Investors interested in leveraging this situation into higher potential profits may also consider buying gold miners such as Randgold (GOLD), Goldcorp (GG), Yamana Gold (AUY), and any of the other gold miners. Finally, those willing to shoulder much larger risks may consider some of the exploration and micro-cap companies that offer significant profits at a high risk such as Chesapeake Gold (CHPGF.PK), Pretium Resources (PVG), Western Copper (WRN), or any other of the junior exploration companies. Though investors should keep in mind that gold mining companies and explorers do not always rise with a rising gold price - do your research before you invest in the miners.

Stocks with low turnover include Philip Morris International (PM), Schlumberger (SLB), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), General Electric (GE) and Automatic Data Processing (ADP).

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

We see several potential sources of continued activity as: (i) Schlumberger (SLB) may look to recapture #1 spot in revenues if Halliburton/Baker Hughes do merge; (ii) Halliburton/Baker Hughes may look to plug their seismic service gap (seismic has been the worst-performing industry sub-segment this year); (iii) Halliburton/Baker Hughes may be forced to divest US assets in order to pass antitrust review. Other potential buyers could include oilfield pure-plays, which may be looking to shift exposure away from offshore rigs and more towards completion/production technologies, or large diversified industrials seeking to capitalize on their strong relative share price performance vs. the energy industry.

  • [By Johanna Bennett]

Earlier this week, analysts at Credit Suisse reduced earnings estimates for Halliburton, Baker Hughes, Schlumberger (SLB) and Weatherford International (WFT).

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

Most of the selling last quarter took place in the energy sector -- and within it, no single stock got sold off as hard by funds as Schlumberger (SLB). All told, funds unloaded more than 4.57 million shares of the oil field servicer, a stake that's worth close to $430 million at current price levels. So, should you sell too? Not so fast.

Schlumberger is the biggest oil service company on the planet. The firm's revenues come from a menu of specialized field services such as seismic surveys and well drilling and positioning. In a nutshell, SLB's job is to pull oil out of the ground as efficiently as possible -- and with oil prices in freefall, SLB's valu! e proposi! tion matters more now than it did when crude was trading in the triple-digits. Oil firms turn to Schlumberger because the tasks they need to accomplish are too nuanced or proprietary to pull off in-house. And that gives the firm a deep economic moat.

Another part of SLB's deep moat comes from boots on the ground. Because Schlumberger is on-site at its clients' well locations, the firm is able to sell more complementary services at one time. The energy sector has gotten shellacked in the last few months, and frankly, that downward pressure isn't showing any signs of letting up. That said, SLB's revenues don't ebb and flow exactly in step with crude prices (unlike its clients), and shares look oversold here.

When this happens, we often see a tradable short squeeze develop as the bears rush to cover their positions to avoid big losses. That said, let's not forget that stocks are heavily shorted for a reason, so you have to use trading discipline and sound money management when playing earnings short-squeeze candidates. It's important that you don't go betting the farm on these plays and that you manage your risk accordingly. Sometimes the best play is to wait for the stock to break out following the report before you jump in to profit off a short squeeze. This way, you're letting the trend emerge after the market has digested all of the news.

Futures Thrill To Taper Delay, Jobless Claims Near Six-Year Lows; JPM To Pay ‘Whale’ Fine

Stocks seemed ready to plunge even farther into record territory after Wednesday's euphoria.

The market held onto gains despite a rise in jobless claims: Initial unemployment claims were up 15,000 to 309,000 in the week ended Sept. 14; the week prior was also revised upward by 2,000, to 294,000. The numbers remain murky because of backlogs in California and Nevada that might be skewing data.

Nonetheless, the figure came in well below economists' expectations for 338,000 claims, and unemployment remains near a six-year low.

Elsewhere, investors were still digesting the Federal Reserve's decisions not to begin pulling back on its $85 billion per month bond-buying program.

While the decision obviously pleased the market, the decision carries its own problems, as investors are once again left wondering when the Fed's highly accommodative policies will start to wind down—not to mention the implications of a reduced forecast for U.S. economic growth.

"Markets were primed for a reduction, and along with a host of other flashing yellow lights that was enough to make plenty of market watchers cautious, including us," wrote Nicholas Colas, chief market strategist at ConvergEx Group.  Yes, the Fed will eventually cut the QE tow rope if/when labor markets improve, but for now they seem content to keep toting the barge and lifting the bale.  That leaves markets free to head to the bar, hopefully avoiding incarceration along the way.  Remember 1999, when markets ripped through Q4 because so many investors had bided their time waiting for the dot-com bubble to collapse earlier in the year?  Cue the music, because this is beginning to look like the same market setup."

Yet for now, markets seem happy to push ahead on the surprise leniency and jobs numbers.

Top 5 Oil Service Stocks To Buy For 2014

The U.S. energy boom is exciting, it's notable, and it could change the world. At the same time, there are still plenty of places around the world that will need to import oil. The major supplier of that demand has been, and will continue to be, the Middle East. The nations that constitute the Middle East produce about 30% of the world's oil, and some countries in the region are looking to step up their game.

The biggest plans to increase production in the Middle East right now focus on Iraq. Ministers in the country hope to triple production by the end of the decade. Thanks to sizable investments from the big integrated oil majors and oil services companies, it's possible that the country might meet that goal.

Demand in some parts of the world may be waning, but growth elsewhere in the world more than makes up for it. The big market for more oil will be in developing nations, most notably Brazil, China, and India. As long as these countries continue to grow at a staggering pace, they will need oil to fuel that engine. Tune into the video below where Fool.com contributor Tyler Crowe check in with Fool analyst Joel South to discuss the prospects for Middle Eastern oil production and assess the demand from emerging countries.

This series, brought to you by Yahoo! Finance, looks at which upgrades and downgrades make sense, and which ones investors should act on. Today, our headlines feature a pair of downgrades for document storage company Iron Mountain (NYSE: IRM  ) and insulin treatments-equipment maker Insulet (NASDAQ: PODD  ) . But the headlines aren't all bad, so before we break the bad news to you, let's start off on a bright note about...

Iron Mountain (IRM) is a global provider of information protection and storage services. This stock closed up 1% at $26.88 in Monday's trading session.

    Monday's Volume: 2.16 million

    Three-Month Average Volume: 1.41 million

    Volume % Change: 95%

From a technical perspective, IRM bounced modestly higher here right above some near-term support at $26 with above-average volume. This stock looks like it might have formed a double bottom chart pattern at $25.91 to $25.53, after shares plunged sharply back in May to late June from $39.32 to $25.91. Shares of IRM have now started to rebound off that $25.53 low with strong upside volume flows. That move is quickly pushing IRM within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if IRM manages to take out Monday's high of $26.94 and then once it clears its 50-day moving average at $27.40 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in IRM as long as it's trending above some near-term support levels at $26 or above that recent low of $25.53 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that's near or above 1.41 million shares. If that breakout hits soon, then IRM will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $28.54 to $29.08. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give IRM a chance to re-fill some of its previous gap down zone from June that started at $34.

Advisors' Opinion:

christianz1969/Flickr Americans lately have been transferring their love of fast-casual restaurant food to stocks of companies in the segment. Late last month, "better burger" specialist The Habit Restaurants (HABT) launched an initial public offering that doubled in price within hours of hitting the market. Like a meal from one of The Habit's more traditional fast-food rivals, though, the feeling of satisfaction didn't last: The shares started to drop after the initial euphoria. But that isn't stopping other fast-casual operators from listing on the exchange. They're finding, though, what works in the kitchen isn't necessarily successful on the market. IPOh Yes IPOs of fast-casual chain operators are coming to the market faster than you can get a refill at a soda machine. This year alone has seen the market debut not only of The Habit, but also the Mediterranean-flavored Zoe's Kitchen (ZOES) and West Coast chicken griller El Pollo Loco Holdings (LOCO), among others. Like The Habit, the stocks of the latter two saw impressive first-day rises (although they didn't pop quite as high as those of the burger purveyor). Why the excitement? Some of it can certainly be ascribed to the IPO market itself, which has had a frothy year. As of this writing, 262 companies have gone public, a 25 percent rise over the same period of 2013. In terms of total proceeds from IPOs, 2014 is set to be the best year for at least the past decade. Building a Better Burrito But likely a bigger factor is that the fast-casual segment has one great model that investors are hoping the newcomers can at least partially replicate -- Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG). Since going public in 2006, the stock of the now-ubiquitous chain has gone through the roof. Its IPO was priced at $22 a share and doubled in its first day of trading. Since then, its shares have ballooned -- at the moment, they trade at nearly $660, for a hard-to-believe 2,900-plus-percent rise from the issue price. It's not t

One low-priced stock that recently soared sharply higher after I featured it was China-based medical components player Dehaier Medical Systems (DHRM), which I highlighted in Jan. 16's "5 Stocks Under $10 Set to Soar" at around $4.75 per share. I mentioned in that piece that shares of Dehaier Medical Systems had been uptrending strong recently, with the stock moving higher from its low of $2 a share to its high of $4.80 a share. During that move, shares of DHRM were consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move had pushed shares of DHRM within range of triggering a major breakout trade above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $4.80 to $4.85 a share.

We're seeing the exact same price setup in shares of small-cap pharmaceutical name The Medicines Co. (MDCO) this week. Just like Gerdau, MDCO has spent the last several months trading in a descending triangle setup; the key difference here is that this trade hasn't triggered yet. The sell signal comes in on a break below support down at $24.

Why all of the significance at $24? It's not magic. Whenever you're looking at any technical price pattern, it's critical to keep buyers and sellers in mind. Patterns like the descending triangle are a good way to quickly describe what's going on in a stock, but they're not the reason it's tradable. Instead, it all comes down to supply and demand for shares.

That $24 level in MDCO is the spot where there's previously been an excess of demand for shares; in other words, it's a price where buyers have been more eager to step in and buy shares at a lower price than sellers were to sell. That's what makes a breakdown below support so significant -- the move means that sellers are finally strong enough to absorb all of the excess demand at the at price level. While MDCO could still have some upside in the near-term and stay within the triangle, it's a name best avoided this summer.

This is what differentiates a product from Coca-Cola (KO), Kraft Foods Group (KRFT), Nestle (NSRGY.PK) or McDonald's (MCD) from just another unknown manufacturer of these very much essential goods and services. In my eyes, brands are as good as a promise to consumers, which differentiates the product from the rest, and promises that the standard of that certain product will be much better than that of another manufacturer. Without this brand that people trust in and are loyal to, there will not be substantial profits and future growth for the company. Do you think Warren Buffett would have bought out Heinz (HNZ) without its world-famous brand name? Definitely not! It would be as good as just another ketchup brand left on the shelf.

Like Kraft (NASDAQ: KRFT  ) before it, a broken-up HP would almost certainly have to be replaced on the Dow. Neither Kraft nor its snack-food spinoff Mondelez (NASDAQ: MDLZ  ) has the monolithic heft that kept the old Kraft on the Dow, nor the sustained growth that might have qualified one section to qualify on its own. Both stocks are doing fine after the split -- Kraft is up a market-beating 14.7%, while Mondelez has risen a modest 3.5% -- but neither one makes a serious case for individual Dow membership.

In 2007, Altria finally spun off its long-held position in Kraft Foods (NASDAQ: KRFT  ) . The value of the Kraft shares that Altria shareholders received corresponded to about 24% of the company's total value. As a result, the reduction in the dividend actually represented a slight increase in the proportional payout that Altria made after the spinoff.

CF's big pop was the only major news-driven gain in this rather underwhelming day. The S&P's second- and third-place finishers, Interpublic Group (NYSE: IPG  ) and L Brands (NYSE: LTD  ) (formerly Limited Brands), gained on sentiment rather than results.

Jefferies analysts noted that Interpublic Group of Companies Inc (IPG) offers some upside, but certain factors will continue to weigh down the stock. As such, the analysts upgraded the marketing and advertising company on Wednesday, but only with a tepid rating.

The analysts upgraded IPG from “Underperform” to “Hold” and now see shares reaching $17.20, up from the previous target of $11. This new price target suggests a slight upside to the stock’s Tuesday closing price of $16.92.

Jefferies analyst David Reynolds commented, “There’s a lot to be said for IPG, robust earnings growth profile, plays well into a ‘growth’ ad spend market and perhaps it remains the key beneficiary of all things POG. Yet, issues around North American profitability and developing economy scale continue to weigh. Richly valued and thus only c.2% upside to the ‘old normal’ and demonstrably bullish 16.7x forward earnings, we think warrants a HOLD. We set our new PT at US$17.20, 16.7x FY14 earnings.”

Interpublic Group shares were inactive during pre-market trading on Wednesday. The stock is up 53.54% year-to-date.

Best Healthcare Technology Companies To Invest In 2014: Vapor Corp (VPCO)

Vapor Corp (Vapor), incorporated in 1987, is engaged in designing, marketing and distributing electronic cigarettes and accessories under the Fifty-One, Krave, VaporX, EZ Smoker, Green Puffer, Americig, Fumre Hookah Stix and Smoke Star brands. Electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes, are battery-powered products that enable users to inhale nicotine vapor without smoke, tar, ash, or carbon monoxide. Electronic cigarettes look like traditional cigarettes and consists of three functional components: a mouthpiece, which is a small plastic cartridge that contains a liquid nicotine solution; a heating element that vaporizes the liquid nicotine so that it can be inhaled; and the electronics, which include: a lithium-ion battery, an airflow sensor, a microchip controller and an light emitting diode (LED), which illuminates to indicate use. When a user draws air through the electronic cigarette, the air flow is detected by a sensor, which activates a heating element that vaporizes the solution stored in the mouthpiece/cartridge, the solution is then vaporized and it is this vapor that is inhaled by the user. The cartridge contains either a nicotine solution or a nicotine free solution, either of which may be flavored. The Company offers rechargeable and disposable electronic cigarettes in two varieties: a two-piece unit, which the Company markets under its DUO product line; and a three-piece unit, which the Company markets under its TRIO product line.

The DUO

The DUO's 2-part construction (battery component and cartridge) features a disposable all-in-one atomized cartridge (also known as a cartomizer). This cartomizer is replaced when the nicotine or nicotine free solution is depleted from use. The all-in-one configuration eliminates the need for maintenance of a separate atomizer and maintains consistent performance of the e-cigarette over time.

The TRIO

The TRIO's 3-part construction (battery component, atomizer, and filter cartridge) features a separate atom! izer from the cartridge; the atomizer is reused and requires separate maintenance over its useful life. Replacement atomizers are available for sale and are easily serviceable by the user. In the TRIO, the only component that needs to be routinely replaced is the refill cartridge (either with or without nicotine).

The Company's electronic cigarettes are sold in kits. In addition to kits the Company sells replacement batteries, replacement mouthpieces that contain the liquid solution and atomizer, for its two-piece configurations as well as mouthpieces with the liquid solution and separate atomizers for its three-piece units.
