Hot Heal Care Stocks To Invest In Right Now

For all involved, it would have been much better back in 2010 if former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling had taken his ball and bat and just gone home.

Despite the fact that no private equity firms in Boston, the hometown of the Sox, would turn over a dime to Schilling for his dicey investment idea, neighboring Rhode Island cheerfully stepped up to the plate. Now, a year after Schilling's doomed gaming business, 38 Studios, famously deflated, the state of Rhode Island, after much debate, has decided to pay the first of many payments on the $75 million in loan guarantees it provided.

That decision affects the finances not only of the tiny New England state, but also those of Assured Guaranty (NYSE: AGO  ) , the monoline insurer that backed the bonds behind that imprudent investment.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Ben Levisohn]

[The] sell-off in recent days was broad based and…affecting stocks in direct relationship to their volatility and expected duration of negative cash flow. Small and mid cap stocks were most affected (especially post-IPO stocks), and those with major uncertain events looming (MDVN) or with significant revenue upside already built into valuation (PCYC) were among the most severely affected. However, nothing changed in the environment to suggest that those events were any more or less likely to have positive outcomes yesterday, or to suggest that revenue potential was any more or less likely to be achieved than was previously expected.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

But looming larger is the specter of increased competition in prostate cancer. Late last month, Medivation (NASDAQ: MDVN  ) got a favorable opinion from an advisory panel for the European Medicine Agency for its Xtandi treatment, which will expand the drug's reach beyond the U.S., where the FDA approved Xtandi last August. Moreover, Johnson & Johnson's (NYSE: JNJ  ) Zytiga saw sales grow 72% in the company's first-quarter report, with even faster growth internationally. Essentially, what the success of Dendreon's rivals shows is that the company is running out of time to carve out its niche in the industry.

What: Shares of biopharmaceutical company Medivation (NASDAQ: MDVN  ) sank as much as 11% after rival Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ  ) announced it was purchasing Aragon Pharmaceuticals to get ahold of its experimental advanced prostate cancer drug, ARN-509.
