Top 10 Dow Dividend Companies To Buy Right Now

Groupon, which misstepped with a President's Day promotion honoring "President" Andrew Hamilton, hit stride on Wall Street Thursday, then stumbled again after reporting higher fourth-quarter revenue but said 2014 earnings would be only slightly above 2013 levels.

The discount coupon giant posted fourth-quarter revenue of $768.4 million, up 20% from the year-ago quarter. Full year revenue rose 10% to $2.6 billion. But the company posted losses of amounting to 12 cents a share for the quarter, unchanged from 2012. But the company said investments in recent acquisitions such as Ticket Monster would increase 2014 costs and curb full year earnings.

Groupon shares, which closed up 2.6% to $10.28, surged more than 15% to $11.88 in after hours trading following the company's earnings 4 p.m. earnings release. But shares quickly reversed, trading off over 5% at $9.73.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Tim Melvin]

There a lot of moving parts to Asta Funding (ASFI), but there appears to be a great deal of value that isn reflected in the current stock price. ASFI stock is trading at less than 65% of book value, but several of its debt collection assets are carried at zero cost basis and yet may have substantial value. The balance sheet is strong with more than $90 million in cash. ASFI has been moving into other businesses including disability claims to increase its growth opportunities over the next few years. It a fairly complex business, but it is very cheap — and the first sign of good news could send the shares a lot higher.

Small cap debt collection stocks likeAsta Funding, Inc (NASDAQ: ASFI), Encore Capital Group, Inc (NASDAQ: ECPG) and Portfolio Recovery Associates, Inc (NASDAQ: PRAA) could be the latest target of a government shakedown or crackdown as the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau said this week thatbefore it formally proposes any rules for debt collection, it wants to hear how collectors verify borrowers' information and communicate with consumers. In other words, debt collectors could be restricted from using text messages, social media or other Internet-based tools in their pursuit to collect debts. With about one in 10 Americans coming out of the financial crisis with some debt in collection, investing in small capdebt collection stocks has been profitable for investors. However, there is no timeline for when any new rules might be released for review or come into effect.

Another earnings short-squeeze prospect is Bazaarvoice (BV), a provider of social commerce software solutions, which is set to release numbers on Wednesday after the market close. Wall Street analysts, on average, expect Bazaarvoice to report revenue of $44.12 million on a loss of 8 cents per share.

The current short interest as a percentage of the float for Bazaarvoice is very high at 14.4%. That means that out of the 41.18 million shares in the tradable float, 6.33 million shares are sold short by the bears. The bears have also been increasing their bets from the last reporting period by 11.6%, or by 656,000 shares. If the bears are caught pressing their bets into a bullish quarter, then shares of BV could rip sharply higher post-earnings as the shorts rush to cover some of their bets.

From a technical perspective, BV is currently trending above both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which is bullish. This stock has been trending sideways inside of a consolidation pattern for the last month and change, with shares moving between $10.15 on the downside and $11.50 on the upside. Any high-volume move above the upper-end of its recent range post-earnings could trigger a major breakout trade for shares of BV.

If you're bullish on BV, then I would wait until after its report and look for long-biased trades if this stock manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $11.35 to $11.50 a share with high volume. Look for volume on that move that hits near or above its three-month average action of 661,797 shares. If that breakout triggers, then BV will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $13 to $14 a share.

I would simply avoid BV or look for short-biased trades if after earnings it fails to trigger that breakout and then drops back below its 50-day at $10.34 a share and then below some key near-term support at $10.15 a share with high volume. If we get that m

Bazaarvoice (NASDAQ: BV  ) was another big winner, soaring 27% higher on the week after posting better-than-expected financial results. Bazaarvoice's adjusted net loss of $0.12 a share was slightly better than the $0.13 a share in red ink that the pros were projecting.

Energizer Holdings Inc. (1.3%) (ENR)($123.21 - NYSE) became an independent company after it was spunoff from Ralston Purina in April 2000. Energizer manufactures, markets and sells dry cell batteries and lighting products worldwide. Subsequently, Energizer expanded its product portfolio through acquisitions, including Schick-Wilkinson Sword (2003), Playtex (2007), Edge/Skintimate (2009), American Safety Razor (2010), and most recently, J&J feminine hygiene brands (2013). Today, Energizer reports results for two segments: Household ($2.0 billion of revenue), which includes the domestic and international battery businesses, and Personal Care ($2.4 billion), which includes wet shaving, skin, feminine and infant care. In April 2014, ENR announced its intention to split the company into two publicly traded firms through a tax-free spin-off of the Household division. The transaction is expected to be completed by July 2015. This may be the first step in realizing the full value of the two businesses, as both divisions may be more attractive acquisition candidates on a standalone basis.

Within the Dow, gains were broad-based with relatively few standouts. Procter & Gamble (NYSE: PG  ) gained 1% after competitor Energizer Holdings (NYSE: ENR  ) blamed P&G's promotional practices for the weak performance of Energizer's Schick line of shaving products. Although some investors have been concerned with the extent to which P&G may rely on promotions to try to recover market share, P&G executives have said the company's spending on promotions is in line with the industry and down from last year's levels. Still, P&G needs to keep demonstrating continued strength in order to regain confidence from its shareholders, who have been critical of CEO Robert McDonald and the company's business strategy.

Additional strengths supporting Aflac business model can be found by reviewing their common equity or book value (ceq), the lime green line on the following graph, in comparison to their current market value (mkval), the aqua colored more jagged line on the graph. Aflac book value has increased steadily except for a minor pause during the Great Recession of 2008. In contrast, their market value has been much more cyclical and erratic. I believe this additionally reflects current undervaluation of Aflac shares. This further supports my contention that Aflac is a great business that is currently on sale.

When investors hear the word "Sears," most immediately think of Sears Holdings (NASDAQ: SHLD  ) , the Eddie Lampert-controlled real estate play that has polarized investors and analysts for years. In the value neck of the woods, much attention has lately found its way toward Sears Hometown and Outlets (NASDAQ: SHOS  ) , a business I relentlessly tout as a top retail pick. But there's yet another Sears that attracts even fewer investigators, probably because it resides north of our borders, in America's big brother, Canada. The company is called Sears Canada (TSX: SCC  ) , and it's bouncing off its 52-week lows, trading cheap, cheap, cheap. Let's take a look and see if this is the Sears you should be focusing on.

allOver images/Alamy Electric-car maker Tesla (TSLA) reported a loss of $74.6 million for the third quarter, double its loss of $38.5 million for the same time a year ago. Tesla attributed the loss to increased expenses to meet the rising demand for the Model S Sedan, as operating expenses rose to $291 million. The company lowered their forecast for deliveries of the Model S Sedan by 2,000 vehicles, to about 33,000 vehicles for 2014, citing delays in a planned revamp of a factory. Forecasts for deliveries in 2015 remained the same. Overall, sales rose to $932 million compared to $603 million in the first nine months of 2013. The introduction of the Model X crossover is now projected for the third quarter of 2015 -- one quarter later than last announced -- coming on top of several other delays in the past year-and-a-half. Tesla's challenge is not demand, but rather production capacity issues, which account for the postponement in delivery time. Cash fell to $2.4 billion from $2.7 billion at the end of the second quarter, due to capital expenditures and the operating losses noted above, while expenses for Research and Development rose 28 percent in the third quarter. This earnings release follows the earnings announcements from the following peers of Tesla: Daimler (DDAIY), Ford (F), General Motors (GM), Honda (HMC), Toyota (TM) and Volkswagen (VLKPY) Highlights Summary numbers: Revenues of $ 851.8 million, Net Earnings of $ -74.6 million and EPS of $ -0.60. In most cases these automobiles are, literally, a mere shell of what they used to be. While the body might be that of a 1957 Ford, the engine is more likely from a Mercedes-Benz (DDAIY) or a Peugeot. Even the body itself might even have been significantly changed. Cars are stretched for new roles as taxicabs. Roofs might have been cut off to turn hardtops into a convertibles.
