BlueOrange Studio/Shutterstock One day out of 365, we pay homage to our sainted mothers. Those of us who are members of this long-suffering, uncomplaining, self-sacrificing class may get some soggy French toast in bed, (don't worry, kids; mom will clean up the kitchen), a chance to read in peace, or perhaps time to indulge in a long, hot bath. Bringing Home the Bacon If you really want to pay back mom for all she's done, get ready to pony up big. A card and some carnations (the official flower of Mother's Day, who knew?) just won't cut it. The cost of replacing mom as nurturer, nurse, cleaner and cook -- according to Insure.com's 2014 Mother's Day salary index -- would run you $62,985 a year, up from $59,862 in 2013. Breaking down the price of having someone else handle her various duties: Cooking and cleaning, $12,230 Child care, $21,736 Homework help, $7,290 Chauffeur, $5,672 Shopping, yard work, party and activity planning, finances, etc., $15,019 And my personal favorite, finding out what the kids are up to (paid in the equivalent value of a private detective), $1,036. Salary.com placed a higher value on moms in its 2014 Mother's Day salary survey, concluding that stay-at-home moms were worth $118,905 and working moms worth $70,107 (this does not include any paid salary from their job), with both groups putting more than 56 hours of overtime at home. These numbers are all up from last year's survey. Cooking It Up in a Pan Mom helps to pay for other things, too. Thanks to the Department of Agriculture, you can see what it costs to raise a child in the U.S. to 18. As of August 2013, the average cost is $241,080. This does not cover college, and hopefully dear old dad is contributing. In 2012, there were 10.3 million single U.S. mothers with children under 18, and one-third of women who gave birth in 2012 were single moms. By becoming moms, women give up time to do other things, what economists call an "opportunity cost." Particularly if your mother st

Shares of Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS  ) crashed yesterday on the news that I had purchased a Nook over the weekend -- or possibly because the rumor that Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT  ) was going to buy the Nook looks to have been nothing more than a rumor. The jury is still out on the final cause.

  • [By Teresa Rivas]

Shares of Barnes & Noble (BKS) were falling before the close Thursday, on news that John Malone Liberty Media (LMCA) is selling most of its 17% stake in the bookseller.

Liberty Media reached an agreement with Barnes & Noble to sell 90% holdings, which will result in the loss of one of its two board seats. The shares are being purchased by institutional investors, with the sale expected to close next week.

As The Wall Street Journal reports, Liberty didn say how much it was selling the share for, but the move comes after Barnes & Noble has enjoyed a big rally, climbing 66% since February through yesterday close. When I keep reading how difficult the lending environment is for midsize private companies, it only makes sense to take a hard look at the business development companies (BDCs).

It’s been a catch 22 for the banks. They are awash in cash — but after getting shell-shocked by the recession, they aren’t willing to put that cash in the system in the form of new small-business loans, as the Fed had intended under its current policy. This conundrum drives businesses to borrow from BDCs at 10% to 15% rates with equity kickers attached to every deal, translating into fat dividends for investors, who get 90% of the income generated by these cash machine-like assets.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Mattson Technology (MTSN) designs, manufactures and markets semiconductor wafer processing equipment used in the fabrication of integrated circuits. This stock closed up 5.1% to $2.25 in Tuesday's trading session.

    Tuesday's Range: $2.15-$2.30

    52-Week Range: $0.70-$2.55

    Tuesday's Volume: 593,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 825,998

From a technical perspective, MTSN bounced higher here back above its 50-day moving average at $2.23 with lighter-than-average volume. It looks like MTSN has now put in a double bottom chart pattern, since the stock has found some buying interest over the last month at $2.05 to $2.07. If that bottom can hold, then shares of MTSN will not set up to trigger a major breakout trade. That trade will hit if MTSN manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $2.40 to $2.52 and then once it clears its 52-week high at $2.55 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in MTSN as long as it's trending above $2.07 to $2.05 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 825,998 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then MTSN will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are its next major overhead resistance levels at $3.17 to its three-year high at $3.30.

Hot Tech Companies To Watch In Right Now

Last week I rolled out a Health Care Portfolio for the Ages by adding two big biotech growth stories, Celgene and Gilead Sciences, to the HealthyMoney Motley Fool CAPS virtual portfolio. From fast growers to dividend plays, to companies with disruptive technology, join me each week as I construct a market-beating virtual portfolio of 10 health care stocks.

Let's continue our quest for a market-beating portfolio constructed entirely from health care companies by adding two health care powerhouses.

Big pharma stuck in a rut?
It's been an interesting year in health care with small- and mid-cap biotechs soaring and traditional big pharma stalling on the crushing blows of the patent cliff. Big names like Roche, AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Merck, and Eli Lilly are all in the midst of major restructuring and cost cutting initiatives after in-house R&D costs had swollen with unimpressive end results. But with the inflated valuations of health care growth companies and the expanding notion that there is a biotech bubble, it is critical that we find some stalwart plays to diversify the virtual portfolio.

iShares Dow Jones U.S. Oil & Gas Exploration & Production Index Fund (the Fund) seeks investment results that correspond generally to the price and yield performance of the Dow Jones U.S. Select Oil Exploration & Production Index (the Index). The Index measures the performance of the oil exploration and production sub-sector of the United States equity market. The Index includes companies that are engaged in the exploration for and extraction, production, refining and supply of oil and gas products.

The big E&P (exploration and production) and major integrated oil stocks see profits rise and fall with the price of crude. The iShares US Oil & Gas Exploration & Production ETF (IEO) is one way to play this part of the oil patch.

  • [By John Udovich]

At first glance, you might think it strange that we have both the ProShares UltraShort DJ-UBS Crude Oil ETF (NYSEARCA: SCO), a bearish bet on oil, and the iShares Dow Jones US Oil & Gas Ex Index ETF (NYSEARCA: IEO), a more bullish bet on both domestic oil and gas, in our SmallCap Network Elite Opportunity (SCN EO) portfolio. But there is a method to our apparent madness as one can be both bearish and bullish on oil and/or gas at the same time.

  • [By Selena Maranjian]

Exchange-traded funds offer a convenient way to invest in sectors or niches that interest you. If you'd like to add some gas and oil stocks to your portfolio, the iShares Dow Jones U.S. Oil and Gas Exploration Index ETF (NYSEMKT: IEO  ) could save you a lot of trouble. Instead of trying to figure out which companies will perform best, you can use this gas and oil ETF to invest in lots of them simultaneously.

    The basics
ETFs often sport lower expense ratios than their mutual fund cousins. The gas and oil ETF's expense ratio -- its annual fee -- is a relatively low 0.47%. The fund is on the small side, too, so if you're thinking of buying, beware of possibly large spreads between its bid and ask prices. Consider using a limit order if you want to buy in to this gas and oil ETF.
